Healthy and alcohol aren’t words you typically associate with one another. When we see the word healthy, we think of green juices, hot yoga, mindfulness meditation, and gluten free avocado toasts. When we see the word alcohol, we think of margaritas, questionable texts, late-night pizza, and a hangover…in that order. While we would never consider alcohol to be healthy by any stretch of the imagination, there are ways to mitigate some of the damage so you don’t have to feel like crap every time you decide to indulge.
In pursuit of the healthiest alcoholic drinks, we’ve experimented with numerous concoctions to find cocktails that not only taste good, but also are least likely to have you reaching for a bottle of Advil the next day.
Side note - we now realize that over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDS, are terrible for your gut health. Wish we knew that one sooner! Consider yourself warned…
We tapped into our knowledge about superfoods and began combining them with various alcohols to see what worked. Through trial and error we tested our own creations, along with others that we found online, and a definitive list of the BEST superfood cocktails was born!
Why Do We Get Hungover?
To better understand why these superfood cocktails are beneficial, you need to understand why excessive alcohol consumption makes you feel terrible.
Many of the negative symptoms associated with a hangover, are due to the chemical byproduct of metabolizing ethanol (which is a fancy way of saying alcohol).
Metabolizing ethanol produces acetaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Sounds bad right? It gets worse…
When the body is depleted of certain enzymes, the acetaldehyde can’t be efficiently converted to a less toxic compound, acetate. The toxic Acetaldehyde then builds up in your system, leading to that dreaded headache, nausea, fatigue and brain fog the following morning (or the same day if you consider yourself the day-drinking type).
Apologies for the biochemistry lesson, but this is important to know when considering how superfood cocktails may help you.
How Can We Mitigate The Hangover?

#1 Ginger Kombucha Superfood Cocktail
Kombucha is rich in probiotics that help mitigate some of the stress your gut takes when exposed to alcohol. The ginger in this superfood cocktail helps to alleviate some of the nausea for people who are sensitive to alcohol.
- Mix vodka and lemon juice in the bottom of a 12 oz glass
- Add kombucha
- Add ice and stir
#2 Blueberry Martini
Blueberries are a welcome addition to any superfood cocktail. They are rich in fiber, potassium, folate, Vitamin B6 and other antioxidants to help reduce the oxidate stress created as a result of drinking alcohol.
- 3oz of unsweetened blueberry juice
- 1oz of lemon juice
- 1oz of Tito’s Vodka
- 1 lemon peel
- Shake ingredients in a shaker
- Pour into chilled martini glass
- Garnish with lemon peel
#3 Strawberry Mojito
If you’re looking for a sweet, yet healthy addition to a superfood cocktail, then look no further than strawberries. This fruit is high in polyphenols, which are beneficial micronutrients that can help your body metabolize alcohol more efficiently.
- 1 cup organic strawberries
- 4oz of Casamigos Tequila
- 8 fresh mint leaves
- 2 drops of liquid stevia
- 2 limes
- 6oz of club soda
- In a blender, puree strawberries until smooth and set aside
- Add lime and stevia to the bottom of a shaker and muddle
- Squeeze the juice of 2 limes into the shaker
- Add the white rum and strawberry puree into the shaker and shake
- Add ice and club soda to a glass
- Pour in mixture from shaker and stir

- 1 packet of SUTRA Black
- 8oz of hot water
- 1oz of white rum
- 1tsp of coconut cream
- Add 8oz of boiling water to a mug
- Add SUTRA Black, white rum, and coconut cream to the mug
- Stir until mixture dissolves
