What are Energy Boosting Superfoods?
The quick answer is, superfoods are foods that contain lots of extra vitamins and minerals. Eating a diet high in energy boosting superfoods can contribute to helping you live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
There is no set standard for what makes a superfood, a superfood, and eating just one or two foods in large quantities probably won’t do you much good. That said, superfoods give you more nutritional “oomph” per calorie than others, and eating a variety of these can do wonders for your health and well-being.
But what exactly are these foods? Greatist lists out the top 25 superfoods in this post. On the list are things like blueberries, kale, and quinoa—things your mama was always telling you to eat more of!
I know 25 is a lot (and that list isn’t even exhaustive!), but don’t get overwhelmed by the sheer number of superfoods out there. You don’t need to look any further for a superfood-packed drink than SUTRA Black and Gold.
In this article we’ll talk about why we need to be eating superfoods, which ones are found in SUTRA drinks, and how SUTRA’s energy boosting superfoods help our bodies out.
Without further ado...
Why do we Need Superfoods to Boost Energy?
A balanced diet leads to high energy
Put down the coffee and pick up something your body will love so much more—superfoods are great for skyrocketing your energy levels!
Lots of people rely on sugar for quick energy. As it turns out, the average American is eating 130 pounds (!!!) of added sugar every single year. But we all know what comes after that short spike in energy: the dreaded “sugar crash.”
Caffeine is another common “quick fix” that people tend to turn to. However, coffee drinks offer little to no nutritional benefit and most caffeine users eventually experience caffeine exhaustion—that feeling of chronic tiredness that sets in once you’ve upped your caffeine tolerance. That’s the opposite of what we’re going for!
Superfoods are truly the best source of natural, sustained energy.
Soil mineral depletion is lurking out there
According to this post by Super Life, the soil we get our food from today is not the same, nutrient-rich soil that our grandparents grew their food from. After decades of use, the minerals in North American soil have been depleted by 85%!
Most of the minerals that are supposed to be in our food come straight from the soil. They are dissolved in water and then absorbed through the plant’s roots. If the minerals aren’t in the soil, that means they are not in our food either.
What does that mean for us?
It means we have to eat more nutritionally-dense foods to reap the same benefits our grandparents did. And what are these nutritionally dense foods?
You guessed it—superfoods!
Lots of factors come together every day to wreak havoc on the inner ecosystem that keeps our hearts beating and immune systems fighting. These are things like stress (can I get an amen?), the pollutants in the air, and—maybe?—a few many trips down the drive-through lane.
Through all that, our bodies keep working hard for us day in and day out. One way to be incredibly supportive of your body is to feed it good things. Superfoods are nutritionally dense and will help the systems in your body function more efficiently.
So, Where In the World Can I Get These Energy Boosting Superfoods?
Google “list of superfoods” and you’ll get a ton of answers—“Top 25 Superfoods,” “52 Best Superfoods,” “More than 100 Superfoods...”
It’s a lot.
No one can eat 100 different foods in one day, although we would be impressed if you did!
You could go out of your way to fit a dozen different superfoods into your daily diet. You could learn how to make kale actually taste good, buy your weight in blueberries, and start eating a bunch of salmon. You could do that, and you should. It's going to better you in the long run.
But there’s another easy way to get a bunch of kick-ass nutritional benefits—yes, including boosted energy—and it is as simple as making a cup of hot cocoa.
That’s right, we’re talking about SUTRA! Both Black and Gold are 100% made up of superfoods, and in the next couple sections we’ll talk about how exactly these superfoods boost your energy.
How Does SUTRA Black (aka the Healthiest Hot Cocoa) Give me Energy WITHOUT Caffeine?
Among other health benefits such as improved skin, whitened teeth, and even hangover prevention, activated charcoal is a superstar when it comes to detoxification. Many people have experienced boosted energy levels as well as decreased inflammation and less mind fog by removing harmful toxins from their body through detoxifying ingredients such as activated charcoal.
The reason cinnamon is so good for you is that it contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde. This substance is antifungal and antiviral, which means your immune system will thank you for eating more of it! Cinnamon is also high in antioxidants and, like activated charcoal, is known to reduce inflammation in the body. All of these great qualities come together to mean a little extra energy for you.
Spicy herbs such as cayenne are great for not only naturally increasing energy levels, but also elevate your mood and help out your heart. Cayenne provides lots of flavor without any of the fats or sodium content of other spices and oils.
Coconut milk contains lots of fatigue-fighting electrolytes, making it a great source of natural sustained energy throughout the day. Coconut milk contains fatty acids called MCTs that your brain can easily break down for increased cognitive function and energy. According to one 2004 study, just one dose of these MCTs can immediately improve cognitive functioning in older adults with memory disorders.
Raw cacao increases energy in lots of different ways. The first is by releasing endorphins. This is great for both energy and your mood, and it will help you generally feel great after eating it. Cacao is also great for increasing blood flow to your brain, which (on top of the coconut milk MCTs) will provide an even greater cognitive boost. A third way cacao is an energy-boosting rockstar is that it contains magnesium. As it turns out, if you are feeling fatigued and just generally tired all the time then there’s a good chance you are deficient in magnesium. Cacao can supplement your magnesium intake, which is a great long-term solution for increased energy.
Salt gets a bad rap, and too much is not going to be beneficial for your body, but sodium (found in sea salt) is an important electrolyte—especially for athletes. A balance of electrolytes is critical for things like hydration, nerve impulses, muscle function, and pH levels. Sodium is one electrolyte that is great for controlling the total amount of water in the body as well as helping out muscle and nerve function.
Forget the sugar! Vanilla gives a natural sweetness to SUTRA Black without all of the energy spiking and crashing effects of added sugar so that your drink can taste amazing without that “blah” feeling that rears its ugly head a few hours after you drink something sugary.
How Does SUTRA Gold (Spiced Chai Golden Milk) Give me Energy WITHOUT Caffeine?
We already talked about coconut milk, cinnamon, cayenne, and sea salt, and all of these are also found in SUTRA Gold! On top of those, here are a few more energy-boosting superfoods Gold has to offer.
You can find a substance in turmeric called curcumin that is responsible for just about all of its awesome health benefits. Curcumin is great for lowering levels of fatigue and increasing energy levels. It’s also yet another brain booster!
Maca is great for boosting not only energy, but libido as well (it isn’t called “Nature’s Viagra” for nothing!). It works wonders in preventing fatigue while at the same time strengthening the immune system. Women can reap the most benefit from maca root as it alleviates PMS and menopause symptoms and even promotes fertility.
The main way black pepper is thought to increase energy is by alleviating symptoms of depression. This is the result of a compound found in black pepper called piperine, which stimulates the brain and has been found to have anti-depressive effects in mice. Pepper also improves circulation and has even helped some quit smoking!
A great fatigue reducer, ginger works to give us natural energy by improving blood circulation and blood sugar levels. This means it can help keep that 3pm energy dip at bay. Ginger is also amazing for your immune system, and absolutely no one feels vibrant and energized when they’re sick!
Red Reishi Mushroom
This superfood is not only great for your immune system and for cancer prevention, it’s yet another natural energy booster as well! A 2012 study found that red reishi helped reduce emotional and physical exhaustion in breast cancer patients. One blogger shared this testimonial of how red reishi increased their energy and helped them quit caffeine.
This is another great sweetener that makes foods and drinks taste delicious without all the harmful effects of added sugar. Stevia has zero calories and is literally hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, making it a great swap. A long-term study published in 2008 found that participants experienced zero pharmaceutical effects after consistently using Stevia as a sweetener—great taste, no consequences!
