How to Make Vegan
Coconut Whipped Cream

Attention vegans and other dairy free citizens of the world: whipped cream is not a thing of the past!

What better to top off your non-dairy ice cream, hot cocoa, or fav morning hot beverage than a fluffy dollop of vegan coconut whipped cream?

This stuff puts regular, thing-of-the-past, old news whipped cream to shame, for a couple of reasons. For one, it’s more widely enjoyable—vegans and our dairy free friends can enjoy it too! For another, it has a subtle coconut taste to die for. Lastly, run-of-the-mill whipped cream can’t boast nearly as many nutrients as coconut whipped cream can.

Uses and Benefits of Coconut

At this point most of us have bought into the coconut oil craze. It’s useful for pretty much anything you can think of, after all. You can’t say that about just anything.

Coconut oil isn’t the only form of coconut we should be using, however. Coconut milk, too, has some crazy-awesome uses and benefits. It’s the main ingredient in the vegan coconut whipped cream recipe we’re about to share with you.

Why you should be sneaking coconut milk in your diet wherever you can

For one thing, coconut milk is high in magnesium. This isn’t just great for giving you peak energy—balanced levels of magnesium in the body also help lower blood pressure, according to Med-Health.

It’s also a friend to your bones. As it turns out, even if you’re eating lots of calcium, you aren’t really helping out your bones unless you’re also eating enough phosphorus. Over half of what makes up our bones is phosphates, and coconut milk contains this important bone building block.

Coconut milk is a stupendous source of electrolytes. If you consider yourself to be an athlete, are consistently low on energy, or are living in a hot climate, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your electrolyte intake. These minerals are important for your body and help prevent heat exhaustion, heat strokes, heart problems, muscle aches or cramps, and low immunity.

Although coconut milk is high in calories, it has been shown to help people in their endeavors to build muscle and lose fat. This is because it is high in healthy fats, which help fill you up and even suppress your appetite. The MCT fatty acids found in coconut milk can help enhance physical performance, making it great addition to a pre-workout snack. The coconut water that can be found in the same can as coconut milk (2-for-1!) make a perfect post-workout drink because of all those electrolytes!

What to Do with the Leftover Coconut Water

As we mentioned earlier, we’ll just be using the coconut milk from the can. This leaves a bunch of coconut water leftover… but this stuff shouldn’t be neglected, either! There are lots of uses for coconut water that will seriously help you out.

Add it to a smoothie with some SUTRA Black, almond butter, a banana, and Greek yogurt for an energy-boosting, superfood-filled start to the morning!

Keep it on standby if you’re an athlete working out on a hot day or if you’ve got the flu. It’s commonly used as a treatment for dehydration related to diarrhea or exercise…if you’re dehydrated from the former, that secret is safe with us. ;)

Add it to a protein shake for post-workout electrolytes. You’ve just sweated up a storm—don’t get tired later because of it! Coconut water is a great way to replenish.

How to Make Vegan
Coconut Whipped Cream

The moment you’ve been waiting (/skimming?) for! With only 2 ingredients, one of which is optional, we dare you to find a simpler recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can (15 ounces) full fat unsweetened coconut milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Refrigerate your coconut milk overnight, or for around 8 hours. This will cause the cream to separate from the water, float up to the top of the can, and harden.

  2. Chill the mixing bowl you’ll be using for 20 minutes before you start.

  3. Open the top of the can and you will see thick coconut milk. That’s the part we want for this recipe.

  4. Scoop everything that isn’t coconut water out of the can and into your chilled mixing bowl.

  5. Fluff the coconut cream with an electric mixer on low for about 5 minutes, dumping any water that separates out, and then on medium for a couple more minutes or until it starts to get fluffy and form peaks.

    • Note: If you’re feeling those lazy Sunday vibes, we’ve heard through the grapevine that you can take a shortcut and whip it up just using a fork!

  6. Plop a big ol’ spoonful into your favorite SUTRA drink and enjoy! We’ve also listed a bunch of other uses for this stuff below.

  7. Use right away, or store for up to a week. You might have to shake it up a little bit to re-fluff it if you choose to enjoy it later.

A Note About Choosing the
Right Coconut Milk

We really want to emphasize that what we need here is FULL FAT coconut milk. (This is our favorite kind!) Full fat will work much better than anything with reduced fat. Plus, the fats we’re talking about are the good kind, so why take them out?

Another thing to note is that we also want coconut milk without guar gum. This is an additive that keeps coconut milk from separating, which might be useful in some cases but for this recipe we need the cream to separate out. As a precaution, try to find a can with zero additives or stabilizers.

Lastly, stay away from anything already labeled “coconut cream,” as this stuff is full of added sweeteners as well as stabilizers that will keep it from whipping up… counterintuitive all over the board!

Possible variations

Some people have found success adding in these fun flavors:

  • Orange or lemon zest

  • Matcha powder

  • Almond extract

  • Pumpkin spice (especially great if you’re using your coconut cream as a topper for pumpkin pie!)

  • A packet of SUTRA Black (healthy hot cocoa) or SUTRA Gold (chai spiced golend milk) whatever your preference happens to be

  • Cocoa powder + Stevia

  • Mint (add coarsely chopped mint leaves to the can of coconut milk before chilling; after taking it out of the fridge, discard the mint)

Alternative Uses for your New Favorite Recipe

You could use this delicious coconut whipped cream exclusively as a topping for your favorite SUTRA drink or healthy sweet recipe, but there are lots of other ways to use it as well!

Here are some of our favorites

  1. Use it in a coconut curry recipe…maybe leave the vanilla extract out, though!
  2. Use it to top a parfait with berries, Greek (or dairy-free) yogurt, and walnuts
  3. Use it as a topping for a carrot soup recipe
  4. Blend it with a frozen banana—plus almond butter, if that’s your jam—for 'nice-cream'
  5. Serve it up just with some fresh fruit for a light, summery dessert
  6. Use it in this avocado coconut popsicle recipe
  7. Add it to a cauliflower soup
  8. Fold it with Cacao into a mousse
  9. Use it as frosting for healthy protein bars or fat bombs
  10. Use it in this peanut sauce recipe

11. If you’re scrambling for an appetizer, set it out with a dusting of SUTRA Black and strawberries for dipping
